Will my sofa fit through the door?

Quick answer
Compare the sofa's depth and height with the door's width. If either is smaller, it can go through on its side or on its back. Then check the turns on the way.

Measure the way in
- Door widthMeasure between the door stops, not the frame. Take the smallest of top, middle and bottom.
- Door heightFrom the floor to the underside of the frame.
- Hallways and turnsMeasure every hallway and stair turn on the way to the room.
Measure the sofa
You need three numbers from the product page or a tape: the width (arm to arm), the depth (front to back) and the height (floor to top of the back).
| Way to carry it | Must be smaller than the door width | Our example |
|---|---|---|
| Upright | Depth | 34⅝ in: no |
| On its back | Height | 30¾ in: yes, 1⅛ in to spare |
| On its end | Depth | Only if the width clears the door height |

Questions
Can I take the legs off?
Most sofas have screw-on feet. Removing them takes 2 to 6 in off the height.
What about stairs?
Measure the narrowest point and the headroom where the stairs turn. Tight turns are the most common problem.
What if it will not fit?
Ask the store whether the arms or back come off, or whether the sofa ships in sections.
